Boxing mindset
Who do you picture when up against a punching bag?

Life
Me versus Myself
Who do you picture when up against a punching bag (Body Opponent Punching Bag)?
I adore kickboxing. I spent a year training under one of the most amazing teachers who’s biggest complaint at the time was that I refused to follow through and punch with adequate force when facing up against a person with pads or a bag.
Picture your worst enemy. Someone who has wronged you.
Soon I started to channel my negative feelings that I had bottled up in work meetings or at home. But somehow, the Buddhist in me felt this was unkind and wrong. I could not sustain the energy behind the attack.
More recently I have been training at the local gym. Our trainer often tries to push us by suggesting we pretend we are hitting him. My friend Ali who was beating the Bob next to me suggested I picture my husband. A rush of words and arguments come rushing to my head.
My response to Ali was to ask “Do you picture your wife?” Let’s not go there right? So if you are a woman and reading this, think hard the next time someone tells you to picture a man in your life. Domestic violence is no joke.
Never hit anyone unless you have the expectation that he can in fairness hit you back.
I had the realization today that I wanted to hit myself. I am my worst enemy.
My inner dialogue goes something like this:
- This is for all of my failures
- This is for all of the embarrassing things I have done
- This is for all the mistakes I have made
- This is for all the wrongs I have done
- This is for all the bad things I have said
- This is for all the bad thoughts I have had
- This is for doubting myself
- This is for not keeping up
- This is for all the dislike of myself
- This is for second guessing myself
- This is for doubting myself
- This is for being able to throw a punch
- This is for becoming stronger
- This is for building my endurance
- This is for becoming wiser
- This is for becoming clearer
- This is for becoming calmer
- This is for becoming a better friend
- This is for becoming a better wife
- This is for becoming a better mother
- This is for me
- This is for me to look good
- This is for me to feel good
- This is for me to meet my objectives
- This is for me to meet my goal
- This is my journey
My punches speed up and the power behind them increases. I am airborne and flying having completed my best workout to date.
If you like my work and want to support it, buy me a cup of coffee.
