Motivation*(Intention+Discipline)^Agency
One gets you started. The other keeps you going. It’s not what you think. The recipe for success in any endeavour.

Motivation*(Intention+Discipline)^Agency

Values drive intention.
Intention is an idea you plan or intend to carry out. If you mean something, it’s an intention. Your goal, purpose, or aim is your intention. You mean to do it, whether you pull it off or not.
Intention is your underlying want driving you forward. For example, I want to feed my family, so my motivation is to put food on the table. I intend to become a published author and am motivated to create and write stories. The intention is where the end goal rests. Intention comes from your values. You value family, or you value your career.
Ask yourself,
- What am I trying to get done as a whole?
- Where is this desire ultimately coming from?
- What is my desired outcome?
Discipline gets you started.
Discipline is the development of behaviour through instruction and practice to establish self-control.
Discipline is how you get the ball rolling. You don’t wake up in the morning and get to your job on time without some discipline. The same goes for the writing career; if I don’t wake up and start writing by 9 AM, then what output can I hope to accomplish? Discipline is the constraints you put on yourself to navigate your momentum forward.
Ask yourself,
- What do I need to do, in small steps, to get to my destination?
- What is the sequence of steps to my journey?
- Where do I need to set boundaries, guidelines, or restrictions to ensure I stay on track?
Motivation is fueled by passion.
Motivation is the psychological driver that arouses a person to act toward a desired goal. The reason behind an action gives purpose and direction to that behaviour.
Motivation is staying up late or working the extra hour because it will bring food to your table. Motivation requires passion.
My motivation is intuition, which tells me I’m in the right direction. Passion driven from the heart that says this path is the one that will lead me to happiness, even if it doesn’t come with a six-figure salary.
Ask yourself,
- What am I passionate about?
- What can I do for hours on end for great satisfaction?
- Isn’t it strange that I do this easily, whereas this other thing is hard?
Agency for the win.
Agency is the state of being in action or exerting power. It can also be how a result is obtained or an end is achieved
Agency is knowing that your actions are justified. This is having faith in the universe or yourself to take that step forward without hesitation. Trust the process. Trust yourself. Without this, if agency is zero–there is little or no success.
The simplest example is how those who grew up with privilege are fearless in knocking down doors to achieve their goals. The person who grows up with limited privileges is the one who hesitates. The act of moving forward hinges on their ability to overcome their limiting fears and beliefs and to overcome societal limitations.
Ask yourself,
- What’s holding me back?
- Is this fact or fiction?
- What must I do to overcome this obstacle?
Now, let’s see that equation again…
